The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, as the name implies, sports a soft and silky coat that as an adult, is "Wheaten" color. He stands 49cm (19") at the shoulder. The female weighs 33 - 35lbs. The male weighs 40 - 45lbs. The Wheaten coat does not shed so the Wheaten is an ideal pet for many people with allergies. Since the coat is not shed, it must be clipped. This breed's coat stays clean and free from matting if it is brushed and combed at least 3 times a week with a good long-toothed steel comb.
The Wheaten has a good natured temperament. He loves people and seems to get along well with other dogs. He enjoys plenty of exercise. This dog is gentle, kinder and less aggressive than other terriers. A good companion to children, adults and other pets, always cheerful, energetic and alert. The Wheaten also makes an excellent guard dog because it is eager to please people and is easy to train.
The Wheaten Terrier originally came from Ireland where he was a hunter, a guard, a herder and a companion to farmers. The Wheaten Terrier has been around since the 1800's but was first recognized by the Irish Kennel Club in 1937. In 1943 the Wheaten was registered with the Kennel club in Briton and in 1973 with the American Kennel Club. In 1969 the first Wheaten was imported to Canada by Ruth Cronk of British Columbia. The first breeders were Ruth and Appl Gunther of Saskatchewan with a litter in 1977 from their American import dogs. 1976 was the first year of publication for a wheaten bulletin. Through the efforts of Alan Fox of Regina Saskatchewan, the bulletin was distributed to the 20 known households with Wheatens. The determination of Alan Fox and Anne Goodsell of British Columbia to bring the breed to full recognition by the Canadian Kennel Club was successful in May of 1978.
