I don't know if you have noticed but Tori has a long tail. Until recently nearly all Wheaten Terriers had docked tails. Slowly this is changing. It's a personal choice and I certainly respect Wheaten owners and breeders who decide to dock tails but it's not for me. I watched a litter of puppies having their tails docked and it looked painful and barbaric to me. After some research I couldn't find a single good reason to dock a Wheaten's tail so I asked the breeder to leave Tori's tail in it's natural state. I think it looks rather nice.
In many European nations, tail docking is considered animal
cruelty and is illegal. Recently the Canadian National Wheaten Association
has put forward a new breed standard which makes tail docking optional.
Perhaps some day it will be a rare sight to see a docked Wheaten!
I've written a pair of short article on the subject. Both articles have appeared in the The Prairie Wheaten.
